Sargassum Seaweed has actually been causing problems since the 15th Century. Christopher Columbus while sailing though the “Sargasso Sea” northeast of the Caribbean in the ships logs and journals was worried that his ship could be ensnared in the seaweed Portuguese named sargaco.
As of 2011, sargassum started to show up on Barbados Beaches. The concern being this algae would cause major issues regarding communities relying on beach-destination tourism. Growing in scope to include Caribbean Islands, Florida, Brazil and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
